Research the auction house. Some servers lack a market for particular items. For example, your server may not have many players mining thorium due to a small percentage of players within that level range. Even though the item is “out of date” in a sense, it is worth much more than you can imagine when looking for it on the market. High level players with an abundance of gold are willing to pay too much for thorium because they are too lazy to mine it themselves. A player would easily do this if he was leveling his smithy. Choose gathering professions like mining and skinning over crafting ones that offer pure profit.
