Choosing your topic for a work-related speech

I recently gave a keynote speech at a wonderful toastmasters club. The name of my keynote speech was “How to overcome your fear of public speaking while becoming a confident speaker.” After the speech there was a question and answer session and at the end of the meeting two of the participants asked me the same question successively. They asked me “What if I’m not passionate about what I’m going to talk about? I have to prepare a speech about my work!”

I paused for a second and told both of them that there would be one or two areas of interest that they could relate to within their topic. The key is to figure out what those areas of interest are and base your speech on those points. This can be challenging, but it can be done with practice. Work-related material isn’t the most exciting or fun to create a speech with. Many people are working in a job or career that they are not as enthusiastic about, and so the passion to speak out on any related topic can be challenging.

However, appearing passionate about your job-related speech or presentation is necessary for a promotion or salary increase. Do your homework and do your research and you will find the areas of interest. Once you do, practice and prepare properly and develop the habit of winning before giving your presentation / speech to your coworkers or boss. They will appreciate your dedication and you will greatly improve your speaking and preparatory skills and you will be able to apply these invaluable skills in an area that you are passionate about!
