NFL Week 8: A review of Pittsburgh and New Orleans and a mini review of the rest

New Orleans beating Pittsburgh was their best victory since they won the Super Bowl last year. It wasn’t just beating a good AFC team. They beat the Steelers at their own game. The Saints punched the Steelers in the mouth over and over again. Also, they only had one turnover which had been their Achilles heel in their most recent losses. Drew Brees played his most efficient game of the season. He completed short to mid-range passes that controlled the clock and kept his defense off the field. He even took advantage of Troy Polamalu’s over-aggression and completed a long 50-yard pass that set up his first touchdown of the fourth quarter. The Saints defense consistently excelled in rushing and sacking Ben Roethlisberger, controlling the running game, and stopping the Steelers on a field goal when the Steelers had first and the goal from the one-yard line changed the momentum. This win could be a blueprint for the Saints to play their remaining games because they will be facing tough teams like Atlanta and Tampa Bay in their division. Although that goes against his nature to attack downfield and score points in bunches.

Pittsburgh, on the other hand, played well enough to win, but didn’t. It seems they were caught off guard by how physical the Saints were. His running game was stifled aside from Rashard Mendanhall’s long touchdown run. His offensive line allowed Roethlisberger to hit more than he’s been charged with. Also, Roethlisberger was not allowed to get the ball downfield to his big receiver Mike Wallace. As bad as the Steelers played, they were still in the game and if Heath Miller hadn’t fumbled midway through the fourth quarter, the results might have been different. Playing in New Orleans in the raucous atmosphere can be difficult and no loss is a good loss. This loss was It was not a conference loss. The Steelers are still a top tier team and come playoff time they will be the team other teams want to avoid playing.

New England beating Minnesota. The Patriots got big when they did too. They stopped the Vikings on opportunities in the second quarter when the Vikings had first and the goal was huge. Brady’s long pass to Brandon Tate to start the third quarter was also key. The Vikings played well at times, but not being more creative on the goal line in the second quarter cost them dearly. A smuggling done by even a cowardly Farve would have caught the Patriots off guard. Farve played well and in control before getting hit in the face. It was terrifying to see him carried off the field with his eyes closed. I thought it was more serious. Farve has an extremely high pain threshold. Randy Moss’ press conference was weird. Moss (who has since been released) wishes he was still a Patriot, he’s not doing well for the Vikings, whose season is now on the brink.

Miami beating Cincinnati. The Dolphins win despite scoring just one touchdown. There, kicker Dan Carpenter now plans to sign for Manchester United as soon as the season is over. The Bengals lose again, but TO scored two touchdowns and is still in love with himself.

San Francisco over Denver. It’s very kind of Roger Goodell to give London an NFL game every year. It’s a shame I give them crumpet crumb teams every year.

Jacksonville destroys Dallas. The Jaguars with a balanced offense and opportunistic defense easily beat the Cowboys in the 90-foot Jerry Jones TV Stadium. The Cowboys have earned the right to be on the six-inch black-and-white TV next to the bathroom in every sports bar.

Kansas City beats Buffalo in a last-second overtime win. The Chiefs win a game that clearly deserved to be tied. Buffalo is the best winless team in NFL history, but they covered the difference in 5 of their 7 losses.

Detroit returns against Washington. The Lions are getting better every week. They have shot to win finishing second in the NFC North. The Redskins pulling McNabb in the final two minutes was a good idea. Rex Grossman is Joe Montana’s second coming in the two-minute offense according to his Pee Wee Coach.

Green Bay excluding the New York Jets. That was a great effort from the Packer defense that kept the Jets scoreless. The Jets coming off a bye must have spent their time with the “Jersey Shore” cast.

St. Louis over Carolina. The Rams play fast on offense and defense. They have a legitimate shot at winning their division. The Panthers, on the other hand, are looking forward to free agency and the draft.

San Diego holding on to Tennessee. The Charger won this game without their best receivers, a wimpy Antonio Gates and, of course, the blocked weekly punt. The Chargers are like cats, they have nine lives. The Titans lost a game they were in control of, but enjoyed their visit to the San Diego Zoo.

Edge of Tampa Arizona Bay. Buccaneer quarterback Josh Freeman is developing a reputation for being key with another fourth-quarter comeback win. The Cardinals hope Kurt Warner will return after his stint on Dancing with the Stars.

Oakland crushing Seattle. The Raiders proved that last week’s big win was no fluke with another standout performance. Owner Al Davis has begun making Super Bowl travel plans. The Seahawks play with speed and heart at home. Along the way they play as passive zombies.
