Types of Bathtubs

A bathtub is a bathtub. Or is that it? Sure, they all allow you to step inside and relax, they all have a water source, and they all share a common purpose, but as with most things, there are different styles of bathtubs. Which one is right for your new bathroom?

A freestanding bathtub has an air of antiquity about it. They can be claw footed or not, which only adds to their charm, and they look heavy and sturdy, just what you need for a nice long bath. What makes freestanding bathtubs different is that they are not surrounded by walls. They are freestanding, which means that if you have your heart set on this type of bathtub, you need to make sure you have enough space in the bathroom for it. It gives you freedom, it gives you grace, and it gives you exposed plumbing that you can embellish at will.

The alcove bathtub is the one we see the most. It is the easiest option and usually the most economical, as it allows your bathtub to be placed between three walls. If you choose to tile or get a tub surround, you too can easily have a tub/shower combination that is ideal for every member of the family. Yes they look utilitarian but they get the job done, they are clean and the pipes are hidden from view.

The combination of the alcove and freestanding tub design is the downfall. This type of bathtub is freestanding but in a box-like cover that covers it on all sides. The tub is dropped into the box and voila, you have your tub. You will need a lot of floor space for this type of bathtub, but the finished product is very pleasing to the eye and, of course, functional. Once again, you can hide all the plumbing parts in the cover for a seamless look.

If you want your bathroom to reflect a luxurious spa, you’re going to want to go crazy and get a corner bathtub. These triangular affairs offer bathing for more than one person at a time and are usually thrown in to add to the luxury look. Yes they take up a lot of floor space and yes they take a long time to fill up but who cares? Once you’re inside, you won’t think about any of it anyway.

So what will it be for your next reindeer bath?
