That’s how I learned the names of all my dad’s tools. Many of them were hand tools, such as a hammer, pliers, screwdriver, and wrench. As I got older, I became more curious about the tools he had and what they were used for. I started watching him do little projects around the house, like when he built a “warm bed” for my mother’s seedlings, such as corn and tomato plants, which would grow in a sheltered box in early spring to be transplanted into the garden when they were strong. . His tools helped him build that.
I was always fixing something around the house, like replacing the hinge on the outside door or helping my brother fix the wheels on his bike. He had many hand tools such as chisels, clamps, hand and pull saws, levels, tape measures, wheels, lasers, planes, putty knives, pry bars, pliers, hex keys, scissors, squares, staplers and staples, vise tools- GRIP, Utility Knives, Driver Bits & Drivers, Awls, Putty Knife, Flashlight, Clamps, Utility Brushes, Tape Measures, Chalk Line, Carpenter’s Pencil, Tin Snips, Nail Remover, Speed Square, Framing Square Level, and some wood chisels.
Playing in the house with a car was not a good idea when my brother and I pushed it against the wall and made a hole. My dad had to fix the hole in the wall using a trowel-like tool to apply plaster and a brush to smooth it out. He used a variety of tools, equipment, and supplies to build a wooden RV to fit in the back of his truck. He lived there during the week when he worked construction, carpentry, and landscaping. He always had time for his wife and his family on the weekends.
I liked watching him build things at home like drawing a blue line on a big piece of plywood with a Chalk Line Reel. To my surprise, he cut that plywood that was lying on 2 wood saw horses with a large hand saw at a very fast rate. He didn’t take long and he had a project done in no time.
Now, as an adult, I know that the many types of hand tools that exist today help people with their repairs and projects. There are even pink tools for women that are made to promote breast cancer awareness. Buying tools for family and friends is an ideal gift for the doer of the project.
